NAPER TIME (based on DOXY)

NAPER TIME (based on DOXY)

Saxophonist Sonny Rollins’ “Doxy” was first recorded on Miles Davis' 1957 Quintet album, "Bags' Groove," with pianist Horace Silver, Percy Heath on bass, and drummer Kenny Clarke, and it’s been widely recorded and performed since. Based on the 1918 hit song, "Ja-Da," "Doxy" has melodic and harmonic qualities related to a hard-swinging 12-bar blues, even though it has a 16-bar form, so it can easily take on the role of the blues in a musician's set. The trademark rhythm starting in the 9th bar is known to musicians far and wide. Integral to the tune, it’s one of the many jazz “secrets” that can only be learned through the oral tradition.
