BRUCE LEE (based on DONNA LEE)
A signature tune of the bebop era, Donna Lee demands solid technical skills, fluidity and dexterity on your instrument. Based on the changes to the 1917 Tin Pan Alley pop song, “Back Home Again in Indiana,” Miles Davis wrote a brisk and challenging melody (though attributed to Charlie Parker) that was first recorded by Parker in 1947. Originally played at a medium-up tempo, it's often played now as a burner, making it an impressive, if common, vehicle for auditions and competitions. Along with Bird's original recording and later recordings by jazz masters of all ilks, Weather Report's bassist Jaco Pastorius did a remarkable version on his eponymous debut recording.
